Matiangi urges African states to adopt a common curriculum
Education CS Fred Matiang’i wants all Technical Vocational Education and Training Institutes in Africa to develop a common curriculum.
He said these institutions should jointly train and develop capacity to maximise opportunities across the continent.
Matiang’i called for heads of all African colleges to review their curriculums to meet the current market demands and carry out extensive research. He said most African countries have a system that focuses on white-collar jobs that fail to meet the needs of the labour market. “The curriculum should be skill-based,” Matiang’i said.
He spoke during the opening of the International Commonwealth Association of Technical University and Polytechnics in Africa conference at Pride Inn Hotel, Mombasa.
The conference focuses on strategic involvement of TVET institutions towards the attainment of post-2015 sustainable development goals in Africa.
The government is currently engaged in the Sh6 billion expansion programme of TVET institutions in all constituencies.
The CS said the National Skills Council and the National Skills Development Steering Committee will reform the Kenyan system.
Members of the council and committee will be CSs of ministries involved in skills training.
“These reforms are geared towards increasing access, equality and relevance of TVET programmes,” he said. “The government is undertaking comprehensive education reforms to introduce competency training assessment.”
Matiang’i said the government places a lot of emphasis on technical institutes.
“This is a key pillar to attaining Vision 2030 and a constitutional requirement,” he said.
