Increasing Electricity Availability through Power Generation

The government will improve the energy infrastructure network and promote development and use of renewable energy sources to create a reliable, adequate and cost effective energy supply regime to support industrial take off for economic growth. The key programmes and projects prioritized for implementation to increase electricity installed capacity by 5,538 MW in 2017 are as follows:
• 250 MW (Diesel Plants);
• 24 MW (Hydropower – Kindaruma and import from Ethiopia);
• 1,646MW (Geothermal Resources: Orpower 4;at Olkaria I; at Olkaria IV; Olkaria V; Olkaria II; Eburu geothermal
project; new wellheads; Menengai; and Silali-Bogoria Phase I);
• 630 MW (Wind power –at Ngong, at Lake Turkana, Kinangop Aeolus, Kipeto, Prunus, and Isiolo);
• 1,920 MW Coal
• 18 MW co-generation
• 1,250 MW LNG Liquified Natural Gas /Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
