PROJECT PROGRESS

President Uhuru Kenyatta on August 28th 2013 led two other Presidents; Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame in the official launch of the new berth.

The new Berth 19, with 15 acres of stacking yard, provides additional annual capacity of 200,000 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units and will significantly improve the port\'s operational?efficiency.

Berth 19 will allow three Panamax vessels of up to 250 metres in length to unload containers at any given moment. The new 240-metre long berth brings the length of the quay at the busy container terminal to 840 metres.

OBJECTIVE

To allow access for post-panamax vessels to come to the Port of Mombasa and to restore the designed water depths within the existing harbor.

BENEFITS

  • This will speed up the delivery of cargo to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, northern Tanzania, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia.

  • Use of channel by post panama vessels.

  • The new terminal will see the port increase its cargo handling capacity and enhance container operations.
