PROJECT PROGRESS

The main roads linking Kenya to Ethiopia are currently under construction. Isolo-Merille Road was officially opened by His Excellency, President Mwai Kibaki on the 29th July 2011. Marsabit-Turbi-Moyale is 20% complete. Kitale-Lokichar-Lodwar-Lokichoggio will begin January 2014 as part of the greater LAPSSET Corridor.

The Lamu-Garsen 92km road is 90% complete. Construction of the Kisumu-Kakamega-Webuye road is scheduled to commence by end of 2012. The rehabilitation of Njambini-Olkalou-Dundori-Nakuru road is complete. Emali-Loitoktok and Mai Mahiu-Narok-Bomet are complete, while the Kericho-Kisumu road is ahead of schedule.

The KWS - Bomas road is at 70% progress and is expected to be complete by March 2013.All Saints to Adams road (4 kms dual line), finance has been secured from the Japanese Government (Ksh 1.6 billion), the start date will be December 2012. The Adams to Ngong through Karen (17 kms), designs are ready. The Eastern and Northern Bypasses are complete.

The Nairobi-Thika Highway was official opened in 9th November 2012 by H.E. the President Mwai Kibaki.

H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. Mwai Kibaki opened the newly rehabilitated Maai Mahiu- Narok road on the 26th August 2011.

Tendering for the construction of the JKIA-Rironi Highway (50km) is scheduled for November 2012 and construction will begin in April 2013. The project includes an overpass on Uhuru Highway The project will be co-funded by the Government of Kenya and the World Bank to the tune of Kshs.25.5 billion.

Construction of the 30km Southern By Pass was launched by H.E. the President on March 16, 2012 and is progressing well. Designs for the construction of DongoKundu Southern by pass are underway.
 

OBJECTIVE

To develop and maintain existing road networks in order to improve access as well as spur movement of people and goods.

  • Nairobi - Thika Road (Lot 1) (A2)
      STATUS:

      Compromise of three city arterial connectors converging at Pangani Interchange and ends at Muthaiga Interchange.
      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      Connector 1:
      Running from Museum Hill interchange through Forest road to Pangani Interchange - Completed.

      The works involved widening of Forest Road to six lanes from four lanes, widening of Museum Hill road to six lanes and provision of fly-over on Limuru Road.

      Connector 2:
      Runs from University way, through Globe cinema flyover to end at Muthaiga - Completed.

      The works involved widening of University Way to eight lanes from six, construction of a four lane fly over across Globe Roundabout, widening of Murang?a Road to six lanes, an underpass, overpass and Foot Bridge at Pangani and an interchange to replace the Muthaiga Round about.

      This was designed as a high-speed highway with limited access and exists. The improvements on this section included widening of carriageway to eight lanes ? (between Muthaiga and Kasarani) and 6 lanes (from Kasarani to Kenyatta University).

      The works involved widening the carriageway to six lanes upto Juja and maintaining the existing provision of service roads, construction of a flyover at the Eastern bypass and an underpass at Ruiru sports club.

      The 30Km Southern bypass was launched by H.E the President on 16th March 2012.

      The contract period is expected to be 36 months. The dual carriageway will branch off from Mombasa road at Airtel Headquarters pass on the edge of the Nairobi National park, Langata?s Southern Estate, Ngong Road, Dagoretti, Gitara and Thogoto in Kiambu County where it will then join the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

      The completed Emali-Oloitokitok situated in Kajiado and Oloitokitok Districts was officially opened by H.E the President on 14th April 2011.

      The project works comprised the upgrading of the road to a two-lane single carriageway bitumen standard road including bridges, culverts and drainage works, from the junction at the Nairobi-Mombasa Road in Emali to Oloitokitok, a distance of 98.8 km.

      The Eastern bypass is 39-km bypass starts on the Ruiru-Kiambu road. It crosses the Northern bypass and the Ruiru railway line into Thika road. After crossing Thika Road, it crosses Kamiti, Gathara-ini and Nairobi rivers into Ruai. The corridor then crosses Kangundo Road and proceeds to Mombasa Road via Embakasi Garrison and the North Airport Road.

      The Northern bypass is 31-km bypass starts from Ruaka trading centre along Limuru Road, overpasses Banana Road through Runda and Thome estates. It then proceeds to Kahawa West and eventually to Ruiru, through Kamae, where it joins the Eastern bypass.
      Nothern bypass will eventually connect to Nairobi ? Nakuru Higway.

      President Mwai Kibaki on November 7th 2012 officially launched the Turbi-Moyale road upgrading project in Moyale. The 122Km road is part of the Trans-Africa Higway.
  • Maai-Mahiu-Narok Road

      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya, Hon. Mwai Kibaki opened the newly rehabilitated Maai Mahiu- Narok (B3) road on the 26th August 2011. The B3 road that is 89.4 km long lies in the Counties of Narok and Nakuru.

      The road is also the gateway to the world reknown Maasai Mara Game Reserve, it starts at about 53 kilometres from Nairobi along the C88 road to Naivasha.
  • Isiolo - Merille Road

      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      Isolo-Merille Road which was officially opened by His Excellency, President Mwai Kibaki on the 29th July 2011.

      It is 136 km long and starts in Isiolo County then proceeds in a northerly direction through Meru North and Samburu district before reentering Eastern in Marsabit County while Marsabit-Turbi road is 121km long.
