OBJECTIVE

To increase national power generation, provide the energy required to accelerate growth and mobilize private sector capital for generation of electricity from renewable energy.
 

PROJECT COMPONENTS

  • Olkaria 1 ? 140 MW Geothermal Power Project
      STATUS:
      On Schedule/Ahead of Schedule
      MTP TARGET:
      To increase access to electricity in rural areas.
      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      • Geothermal Corporation has drilled 6 wells in Menengai.
      • The Rigs are currently on wells 5 and 6 ? Each has a potential of 10Mw.
      • Project scheduled for completion by end of 2013.
  • Olkaria II ? 35 MW Third Unit
      STATUS:
      On Schedule/Ahead of Schedule
      MTP TARGET:
      To increase access to electricity in rural areas. Kengen full commissioned 35 Mw capacity.
      ANNUAL TARGET:
      35 MW available.
      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      Full commissioned capacity of 35MW Completed in April 2010 as scheduled.
  • Olkaria III - Additional 85 MW Geothermal Power Plan
      STATUS:

      MTP TARGET:
      To increase access to electricity in rural areas.

      To drill 10 production Wells. To enhancement of Power Plant by 70 Mw electricity generated. To increase access to electricity in rural areas.

      A site has been identified at Shauri Moyo at the Coast Region. Implementing partner Daewoo International.
  • Kiambere Unit 1 Upgrade from 72 to 82 Mw)

      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      The Kiambere Unit 1 upgrade from 72Mw to 82Mw was completed in October 2009 and its fully operational.
  • Tana Hydro Power Station Upgrade by 10MW to 20 MW

  • Ngong Wind Plant ? 5 MW
      STATUS:

      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      The Wind Plant was completed in July 2009 and its fully operational.

      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      Trial commissioning ongoing from December 2010 and the final commercial operation projected for January 2011.
  • Sangoro Hydro-Power Station ? 21Mw
      STATUS:
      On Schedule/Ahead of Schedule
      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      Project under construction and expected date of completion was November 2011.
  • Kindaruma Unit 3 - 32 Mw. and rehabilitation
      STATUS:
      Commenced
      COMPONENT PROGRESS:
      The Power contract was signed and commenced in February 2010 and the expected completion date is June 2012 for the 3rd Unit and rehabilitation to be completed by mid 2013. Civil contract commenced in July 2010.


  • Athi River Mining Coal Power Station 19 Mw

  • Wind Power Station Built at Lake Turkana - 300 Mw
      STATUS:

      Project preparation ongoing. Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) negotiations approved by ERC and signed in January 2010.

      300Mws from 365 turbines in Lake Turkana starts in June 2012 to be completed in 2015.

      This has increased connectivity from 12% to 22%.

      During Phase 2 the Authority is targeting to increase the national connectivity from 22% to 65%.
