The aim will be to increase the railway capacity to handle 50 per cent of freight cargo
(25 Million Tonnes) from the Mombasa Port. To achieve this objective, the government will: develop a standard gauge railway line between Mombasa through Nairobi to Malaba with connectivity to Kisumu,Uganda and Rwanda; expand Nairobi Commuter Railway Services system that involves upgrading of the Commuter Core System (existing commuter
rail line); construction of a railway line from JKIA to the Syokimau Railway Station, and construction of Kisumu and Mombasa commuter rail systems.
